Steve Goodrich, co-owner of Custom House Wharf, noted, “The smoke was visible from Falmouth.” The devastation was tangible. Lifelong fisherman Steve Train expressed the magnitude of the loss. “The traps are junk now,” he lamented. Each trap fetches about $200, and many generational tools were lost.
Structural Damages
At least three buildings bore the brunt of the fire. The storage location faced significant damage, yet neighboring stores like Maritime Antiques and Sea Bags Factory Store also incurred smoke and water harm. Deputy Fire Chief John Hendricks confirmed, “We contained the fire, preventing further spread to Sea Bags.”
Spirits of Resilience
Despite the destruction, the resolve to rebuild is strong. Harley Lewin, who owns Nanuq Kayak, is determined. “You put your heart into it,” he shared. “We’re committed to restoring what was lost.”
Investigation and Aftermath
The fire’s origin remains unknown. Fortunately, only two firefighters sustained minor injuries. The community, although rattled, bands together with hope for reparation.
