QualRecruit’s freshly unveiled report on the impending 2024 U.S. elections delves into the factors driving support on economic issues for both candidates among voters in pivotal swing states. The findings suggest that existing polling could be overstating the extent of Vice President Harris’s support concerning economic matters.
QualRecruit, based in the heart of Ottawa, Ontario, launched a study exploring trust in economic management amid the 2024 election. This involved obtaining perspectives from swing state voters on how America’s economic future might appear under their trusted candidate versus the opposition. Voters who had greater confidence in Donald Trump concerning economic affairs were compared to those favouring Kamala Harris. Using video feedback, a massive 52,622 words of wisdom emerged from transcriptions, offering insight into what lies beneath the raw numbers in polls.
“In today’s unpredictable economic conditions, voters’ views on the candidates’ abilities to manage jobs, inflation, and growth are key to their election day choices,” remarked Sebastian Murdoch-Gibson, co-founder of QualRecruit. “Our work highlights how QualRecruit’s advanced qualitative data-collection methods, enhanced by AI, provide a nuanced understanding of the sentiments that polling figures might overlook.”
Key Insights
-
Respondents favouring Harris on the economy expressed more flexibility, acknowledging potential benefits from the opposing candidate compared to Trump supporters.
-
A persuadable group: This indicates that Harris’s economic support in recent polls might be more malleable compared to her Trump-supporting counterparts. Although her economic support is already considered weak, a hidden "softness" in this support might be obscured.
-
Unified perceptions, divergent interpretations: Despite different economic preferences, voters largely agreed on the candidates’ factual characteristics but varied in their interpretations:
-
Trump: Both camps viewed Trump as likely to pursue mass deportations and a stringent immigration stance. Proponents see this as a move to protect workers and raise wages, while critics argue it will inflate prices by labor shortages.
- Harris: She is seen across the board as a VP enduring economic hardship. However, supporters think she’s managing economic shocks attributed to former Trump policies. Detractors attribute the lacklustre US economic performance directly to her decisions or inaction.

Methodology
Conducted from September 12 to 22, in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, this qualitative study engaged 84 likely voters. They were evaluated based on key demographics and economic trust preferences. A representative demographic subset, split between Trump and Harris supporters, shared insights in brief video exercises. Though it’s not statistically comprehensive, qualitative research fosters a richer discovery of underlying themes not previously considered, adding depth to quantitative data studies.
