The Charming Appeal of Digital Odyssey Media
For a quarter of a century, Yellow Scene has dedicated itself to spotlighting businesses across Boulder County. Recently, I had the delightful opportunity to chat with Julien Motola, founder of Digital Odyssey Media (DOM). Nestled charmingly in Longmont, Colorado, DOM offers a diverse suite of photography and videography services.
Early Artistic Influences
Julien Motola, a Boulder native, has long been enamoured with the performing arts. His parents pioneered the Rocky Mountain Theatre For Kids and the Actors Academy for the Performing Arts in Denver, immersing young Motola in theatre from the tender age of four. His keen passion for theatre sparked an interest in media and storytelling.
Discovering a Passion for Visual Media
Curiously, young Julien’s high school days marked the beginning of his photography journey. Influenced by his grandfather, a photographer in his own right, he launched a school project—they say the rest is history! This venture inspired him to start a photography business, capturing senior and family portraits, thus building a robust portfolio.
Film school naturally followed. During an internship with Futuristic Films, he fostered an admiration for digital content and its commercial applications, which ultimately birthed Digital Odyssey Media.
The DOM Approach to Storytelling
Julien’s creative ethos is driven by storytelling. "I wanted to establish some sort of brand identity… I enjoy telling their story. Like an ‘odyssey’—a journey," he muses. Julien’s passion for stories led him to forge alliances with digital marketing agencies like PIN Business Network, which includes Our Community Now (OCN) Eats. Through this collaboration, Julien documents and films promotional content for local dining establishments around the Boulder area.
A Clientele as Diverse as the Arts
Digital Odyssey Media thrives on a wide array of clients such as OCN Eats, Mountain Sun Pub, and Southern Sun Pub, to name a few. Julien also extends his artistry to non-profit organisations like the Kutandara Center, which teaches Zimbabwean marimba music. Such a varied clientele contributes to the rich tapestry of experiences DOM encounters daily.

Building Bonds through Creativity
Julien attributes his success to the genuine rapport he builds with clients. Engaging with clients on a personal level before the camera comes out puts everyone at ease. “My favourite thing is the diversity of experiences,” he confides. It’s the human connections that truly enrich Julien’s work.
The Joys and Challenges of Freelancing
Freelancing is a thrilling ride, though not without its trials. "The hardest thing is the inconsistency… juggling a multitude of responsibilities," Julien reflects. Yet, these challenges become stepping stones towards achieving his long-term ambition—a flourishing production house.
The Road Ahead for Digital Odyssey Media
Hold your excitement—the future gleams with promise! Julien envisions expanding DOM into an all-encompassing creative agency. In the meantime, DOM’s newest offerings include photography lessons and bespoke packages for your 2024 holiday celebrations. Stay in the loop by visiting the website or following them on Instagram.
Digital Odyssey Media stands proudly as an inclusive, LGBTQ+ founded business. Whether documenting the dances of a pub’s patrons or capturing the melodies of marimba musicians, DOM marches on, ever keen to embrace new adventures. Cheers to that continuation!
