In a world that seems ever so bustling, the BRICS economic bloc takes a remarkable stride forward. With Brazil assuming leadership from January 1st, the nation finds itself orchestrating a symphony of nations with five new members under its baton. This charming twist arises from the addition of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia. These countries were formalised as members through the much-considered Johannesburg Declaration, where they were chosen amongst 20 hopeful candidates.
This expanded ensemble now represents a staggering portion of our planet. Nearly half of the world’s population, 36% of the global GDP, and over 50% of Earth’s hydrocarbon reserves belong under the BRICS umbrella. Quite an impressive portfolio, wouldn’t you agree? In contrast, the G7 flaunts a more modest 9.8% of the population and about 30% of global GDP. Meanwhile, the G20 lays claim to two-thirds of the global populace and 85% of the world’s economy. Talk about diversity!
The year is peppered with crucial gatherings, culminating in the BRICS Summit, initially pencilled in for July in the enchanting city of Rio de Janeiro. But before the grand occasion, over 100 meetings of working viscounts and barons from member countries are anticipated. They will hash out the finer points needed to steer this grand ship under Brazil’s aegis.
Brazil has its agenda set under the theme of “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.” It’s a call to arms on two fronts: global South cooperation and the ever-pertinent reform of global governance. These aren’t just whims of Brazil; they echo President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s longstanding priorities since his first term, especially during Brazil’s G20 presidency in 2024.
Now, behold, the five priorities laid before this august assembly for the year 2025:
- Facilitating trade and investments with snazzy payment mechanisms between member states.
- Pushing for inclusive governance of artificial intelligence geared towards development.
- Upsizing financial structures to tackle climate change, all in conversation with COP 30, the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
- Fostering cooperative projects among the Global South, with a keen eye on public health.
- Bolstering BRICS as an institution, ensuring its growth and relevance.
In an interview with [Agência Brasil](https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br), Ambassador Eduardo Saboia, Brazil’s BRICS sherpa, eloquently stated, “If you want to build a better, sustainable world, BRICS must be part of that construction. Understanding among these countries is imperative, as it leads to greater comprehension on a global scale.” So, dear reader, whether over a cup of Earl Grey or perhaps a strong Brazilian coffee, isn’t it splendid how cooperation can forge newer paths?
