AMC Networks: An Englishman’s Perspective

Ah, AMC Networks, a company well-known for its marvelous cable channel brands such as AMC, IFC, and Sundance TV. They’re also quite popular for their streaming services like AMC+, Acorn TV, and the rather chilling Shudder. Recently, they reported a bit of a dip, specifically a 10 percent fall in fourth-quarter U.S. advertising revenue, bringing it to $124.8 million.

Streaming Success Amidst Subscription Revenue Shifts

Now, let’s dive into the figures. Their U.S. subscription revenue saw a minute rise to $314.8 million from last year’s $314 million. This increase was due to higher streaming revenues, which managed to offset a 13 percent tumble in affiliate revenues, now sitting at $138 million.

Interestingly, their streaming revenue, which seems to be the golden goose, rose 17 percent to $177 million. Much of this growth comes from subscription price increments.

Standing Firm with Subscribers

The end of the fourth quarter saw AMC Networks holding steady with its streaming subscriber numbers at 10.4 million. This figure remained unchanged from both the third quarter of 2025 and the fourth quarter of 2024.

A Strategic Shift in Focus

AMC Networks, under the stewardship of CEO Kristin Dolan, is steering towards a strategic pivot. They are moving away from linear TV channels like AMC, IFC, and Sundance TV, focusing instead on niche streaming platforms. Dolan boldly proclaimed the company’s focus on platforms such as the horror-centric Shudder and the crime and mystery-oriented Acorn TV, alongside their flagship AMC+ and others like HIDIVE, Sundance Now, and ALLBLK.

Sustainable Business Model and Expanding the Team

During an analyst call, Dolan emphasized AMC Networks’ sustainable business model, pivoting towards niche streaming as their primary domestic revenue source. “The value of studio assets and powerful IP is underscored by our diverse content mix across platforms,” she stated with confidence.

Moreover, in alignment with their global streaming ambitions, AMC Networks has appointed former Peacock exec Annie Luo as the new president of streaming growth (source).

Financial Performance: A Look at the Numbers

For the fourth quarter, total revenue saw a modest 1 percent decline to $595 million, slightly better than analysts’ $585.2 million forecast. The operating loss shrank impressively to $50.8 million, from $254.2 million the previous year.

In domestic operations, total revenue dropped marginally by 1 percent to $515 million. Meanwhile, international revenues experienced a 5 percent decrease to $81.3 million, though subscription revenues rose by 1.2 percent.

The Future of “The Walking Dead”

During the analyst call, Dolan mentioned the rights for “The Walking Dead” are returning to AMC Networks. As the series streams on Netflix and their current deal nears its end, discussions are already underway. Dolan remarked, “The rights are very valuable. We’re in conversations about their future home, though not ready to disclose details just yet.”

In conclusion, AMC Networks appears to be skillfully navigating the shifting sands of the entertainment industry. By embracing niche streaming, they’re aligning themselves for future success.
