Economic development leader hit with embezzlement charge

The Central Vermont Economic Development Corporation (CVEDC) finds itself mired in a rather unfortunate predicament. Their former executive director, Melissa Bounty, stands accused of embezzling a rather staggering sum exceeding £55,000.

Legal Proceedings

Bounty, a 42-year-old from Waitsfield, is due to face the music at the Washington County Superior Criminal Court. Her arraignment is set for the 15th of January, as per a press release from the Montpelier Police.

Not much to be shared beyond this at present, I’m afraid. The police prefer to keep mum until after Bounty’s court appearance. One can only speculate about the contents of the forthcoming police affidavit.

Investigation Unfolds

The saga began last July. A report arrived at the police department hinting at misappropriations by Bounty. It appears she dipped into the till for her own gain during her time as executive director from 2022 to 2025. Quite the pickle indeed! This is part of an ongoing investigation launched in light of these serious allegations.

Bounty’s Position

When reached for comment, a voice at Bounty’s number seemed less than forthcoming. “No comment,” seems to be the order of the day. The CVEDC themselves appear just as taciturn. Attempts to reach them for a statement were met with silence.

Earlier, VTDigger reported Bounty was on leave due to these allegations. Interestingly, details were kept deliberately vague. At the time, Bounty maintained her innocence, expressing pride in her commitment to the Central Vermont business fraternity.

Nonprofit’s Role

The CVEDC, for the unacquainted, is one of twelve regional development corporations dotted around the state. Their noble aim is to bolster local businesses with state and federal funds. A worthy cause indeed, now overshadowed by this most regrettable circumstance.

Final Thoughts

This entire affair is deeply unsettling for those involved. One can only hope justice prevails and confidence in regional development bodies is swiftly restored. More details will surely emerge following the court proceedings, and one can only hope for a resolution sooner rather than later. Let’s keep an ear to the ground for future developments.
